I was asked to engrave three disks with a signature facsimile and birth year in Chinese. I've done a few in English but this is my first in a different language. For those not familiar with signature facsimile, it is the exact way someone signs their name. This was very important to the customer that the name and birth year of her granddaughters was exactly the way she would write it. The disks are 14 karat yellow gold 18mm diameter. The back of the disks are engraved with the name in English and the Sign Language symbol for "I love you." COMMISSIONED
I was contacted over the summer to hand engrave a presentation Sporran by maker Scott Duncan. The Sporran was an important piece presented to Scott’s Clan Chief, Alexander Robertson, of Straun, the 23rd chief of Clan Donnachaidh for his 80th Birthday.
The cantle is the hinged front on a kilt sporran. The engraved plate is nickel silver and measures 5.88" x 3.00" x .06" thick. The Latin phrase translates to "Glory is the Reward of Valor." There are two bracken ferns between the wording. There is a small 1.50" tall shield with 3 heraldic wolf heads on it which is the Chief's arms.
It was an honor to have my engraving on the sporran of such a prestigious life milestone. COMMISSIONED
The engraving is done in reverse for wax impressions. It was a difficult job due to the heavy wear of the customer's original ring and lack of any heraldry artwork associated with the surname. I photographed the original ring with a macro lens, sketched what I could see and filled in the missing details with the customer. Everything considered, I think it turned out quite well and the customer was very pleased. The Latin phrase "Ne Cede Malis" translates to "Yield not to misfortunes." The ring is a 14 karat yellow gold oval signet with an 18x15mm surface face. COMMISSIONED
