#150 The General Hobo Nickel

Carved on a 1927 Full Horn Buffalo Nickel is my latest carving, "The General." The carving features Johnnie Gray and his beloved Annabelle Lee locked in a loving embrace while riding his prized train. The engraving is based on film artwork used to promote the blockbuster "The General," a 1927 silent film featuring Buster Keaton. Johnnie's tie, train obverse and train windows are 24 karat gold inlay.   SOLD

Carved on a 1937 Full Horn Buffalo Nickel is Le Pew. This coin engraving features "Pepe Le Pew" hugging "Penelope Cat" in an unreciprocated embrace, for reason of obvious nasal discomfort. The four hearts are 24 karat yellow gold.   SOLD

#148 Daffy Duck Hobo Nickel

Carved on a 1937 Full Horn buffalo nickel is Daffy Duck. Daffy's bill is inlaid in solid 24 karat yellow gold. The background is the classic, circular Looney Tunes design. This hobo nickel carving has a deep relief and is neatly stippled. Nineteen Thirty-Seven (1937) is the year Warner Bros introduced Daffy Duck to cartoons.

Arguably the webmaster's favorite cartoon character of all time, Daffy is seen here in a characteristic pose with arms crossed suggesting defiance, contempt, and or, disgust. One can envision Daffy having just said, "You may fire when ready, grizzly!" Beautiful tribute to Daffy!   SOLD

#144 Lem The Hobo Soup Guy Hobo Nickel

I have always admired the Hobo Soup Label and thought for a long time the little Hobo would look great on a nickel. So, a few months ago I decided to search for the owner and ask for permission to use the artwork on a Hobo nickel carving. Sadly, I found that the owner/inventor of Hobo Soup, Jim Kaercher, had passed away in 2014. However, I was able to contact Jim's daughter Sue Kaercher, and she thought it was a great idea to create a Hobo Nickel using the Hobo Soup logo.

Sue is a fourth generation editor of the Ortonville Independent, a family company of which her father Jim and grandfather Lem were also editors. She has a column where she writes about interesting things and wrote about my nickel carving. Her grandfather Lem and father Jim's story of how they founded Hobo Soup is fascinating and one everyone should know. I asked if the the little Hobo had a name. Sue said he didn't but that he should be named 'Lem' after her grandfather who spent several years as a Hobo when he was a young man.
